Qualifications and Disqualifications for Election as President

The Constitution of Kenya - Article 137

  1. A person qualifies for nomination as a presidential candidate if the person—
    1. is a citizen by birth;
    2. is qualified to stand for election as a member of Parliament;
    3. is nominated by a political party, or is an independent candidate; and
    4. is nominated by not fewer than 2000 voters from each of a majority of the counties.
  2. A person is not qualified for nomination as a presidential candidate if the person—
    1. owes allegiance to a foreign state; or
    2. is a public officer, or is acting in any State or other public office.
  3. Clause 2-b shall not apply to—
    1. the President;
    2. the Deputy President; or
    3. a member of Parliament
